Explore the psychology of Yoga as revealed in the Gita by identifying tools of self-awareness in everyday events and nurturing the art of loving, which is the heart of Gita teachings. This enlightening program will offer access to the magnificent Gita through:

• Analysis: close readings and a historic overview
• Media: PowerPoint presentations, videos, sacred sound recordings
• Participation: Kirtan, recitation of verses, meditative exercises
• Discussion: open-ended dialogue

May 6 • Setting the Scene (chapters 1–2)
History of the Gita, dramatis personae, the embodied self, psychic obstacles in Yoga practice, tools of self-realization

May 13 • Vedic Cosmology (chapters 3–5)
Rules of the cosmic dance, invisible friends, remembrance, the other side of the mirror

May 20 • Everyday Miracles (chapters 6–8)
Action in a Yogic mindset, transforming matter into spirit, personal ecology

May 27 • Bhakti: Yoga of the Heart (chapters 9–10)
The courage to love, modes of nature, good and evil, navigating the swamps

June 3 • The Dark Side (chapter 11)
Atheism and the universal form

June 10 • The Self in Transcendence (chapters 12–14)
Mind over matter, Yogis as agents of transformation, perfecting renunciation

June 17 • Madness of the Saints (chapters 15–17)
Rishis, avadhutas, and the totally insane

June 24 • Gita in the World (chapter 18)
Enlightenment, the shape of things to come

The New York Times describes Joshua M. Greene as “a storyteller who traces journeys to enlightenment.” After living for 13 years in ashrams in India and Europe, he returned to New York in 1982 and began a career as a writer and filmmaker. His books on Holocaust testimony have been adapted to film for PBS and the Discovery Channel. He teaches in the religion department of Hofstra University and is a frequent lecturer.
