Kirtan with Shubalananda and Durga

Friday, August 15 • 8 p.m.

$10 donation

The singing of kirtan goes back thousands of years in India. Created by ancient Rishis from Sanskrit seed mantras of the Vedas, sounds such as Om Namah Shivaya and Sita Ram resonate with the chakras and move energy up the spine. Kirtan is an easy practice using simple melodies in call and response style, over and over and with more and more bhava (spiritual emotion, or Ray Charles-like soul) as the singers enter higher planes of consciousness. Other forms of practice can be strenuous, but kirtan is fun and just flows from everyone's connection to music. Even people who think they don’t sing well, discover themselves singing on pitch and in time. Kirtan is an excellent way to discover the true voice. Come experience this easy, happy, deep practice.

Shubalananda has been leading Kirtan for many years. His guitar and harmonium playing and his voice of experience give his Kirtan a power and a bhava that is shared with all who join him.

Durga opened to the mystical dimension of spiritual music as a child. She’s studied with Shubal as vocal responder and percussionist for over a decade and brings a shakti that unifies the group energy.
